VCBM

VCBM/MICCAI workshop on medical augmented reality and visualization-oriented systems for intervention planning

Proposal for a Satellite Event at MICCAI 2018 in Granada, Spain

Background
The VCBM (Visual Computing in Biology and Medicine, vcbm.org) workshop series started in 2008 in Delft initially as a biennial event; since 2014 as an annual event.  Therefore, in 2018, we expect the 8th VCBM EUROGRAPHICS workshop. It is an official EUROGRAPHICS workshop, the attendance of which was between 51 (2015 in Chester) and 73 (2010 in Leipzig).

On the other hand, the MICCAI conference series was formed in 1998 by the merger of CVRMed (Computer Vision, Virtual Reality and Robotics in Medicine), MRCAS (Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery) and VBC (Visualization in Biomedical Computing). The first MICCAI conference was in 1998 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is now well-established large-scale conference that covers topics on both Medical Image Computing as well as on Computer Assisted Interventions.

Despite their common interests these conferences have run in parallel so far. Granada will be a nice meeting place for coordination actions.

Motivation
VCBM 2018 will be held in Granada on September 20-21; the first day coincides with the last day of Miccai 2018 edition (the second day of satellite events). Since the two conferences will be collocated, and specific topics are common for both, we propose to coordinate VCBM and MICCAI as follows.

Integration
Selected MICCAI poster presenters that did not have a talk at MICCAI will be invited to present their work in an oral talk at VCBM first day. The committee that decides about these invitations will be composed of MICCAI representatives and the VCBM paper co-chairs (3+3).  The selection should be based on a fit of topics, in particular, medical augmented reality and visualization-oriented systems for intervention planning are relevant.

To support this idea, these presenters will be invited to attend the VCBM conference  paying a reduced student fee.

Proceedings
VCBM proceedings are published online in the EUROGRAPHICS Digital Library. There is no open source model so far. Other kinds of publishing need negotiation with EUROGRAPHICS, since they consider their publications as exclusive. The MICCAI papers that were invited for presentation at VCBM would not be part of the proceedings but a reference to the MICCAI proceedings would be added.

The agreement would be an orientation for future MICCAI conferences in Europe, where a similar integration is desirable.

Topics
Workshop topics are of common interest to the MICCAI and VCBM communities. They include, among others:

  • Medical Augmented Reality
  • Visualization-oriented systems for intervention planning
  • Advanced visualization systems for data analysis
  • Educational visualization software

Submissions
Regular submissions to MICCAI will be selected and authors will be invited to this joint workshop.
